I know what you are thinking - a basketball organization? This is just not any "basketball organization". This is an incredible association of young men, young women, coaches and yes, PARENTS! In only its third year of operation, this association is a community based volunteer organization whose purpose is to use youth basketball as a tool to expand the horizon of young people. The organization's primary goal is to successfully prepare young boys and young girls both academically and athletically, for the opportunity to pursue a degree of higher education at the college level.
This organization has an array of fantastic programs to include: the fundamentals of basketball ( of course ), test preparation, tutoring, academic progress monitoring, life skills, character and image development, public speaking, mental and physical health improvement as well as statewide/national exposure through competitive tournament play.
What I really liked about this organization was that parental involvement was required and if the young man or woman failed any classes in school, they were barred from playing basketball! Age range of the boys and girls in the organization are 8 - 19.
Last year, their teams won over a hundred trophies to include three national championships and three state titles. They also have a number of high schoolers that are sure to be nationally ranked this year.
Their website is impressively constructed, professional and informative. It contains all sorts of free educational and life skills aids, financial aid information and sports trivia.
This month's website is the ATLANTA SELECT BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION.
